Sakana AI’s latest update to its model router, Fugu Ultra v1.1, boasts an impressive 7.9-point improvement over its previous version and claims to outperform Fable 5 without even including it in the routing pool. On paper, that sounds like a leap forward in AI orchestration. But this claim deserves scrutiny.
Model routers work by dynamically selecting the best AI model for each query to optimize response accuracy and efficiency. The bold assertion that Fugu Ultra 1.1 beats Fable 5 by exclusion, without independent benchmarking, raises questions about transparency and methodology. Without public metrics or third-party verification, these improvements risk being marketing statements rather than validated progress.
Another red flag is its continued unavailability in the EU, cutting off a significant market subject to strict data and AI regulations, which may limit its adoption and raise concerns regarding compliance.
The update also adds a Claude Code-compatible endpoint, signalling incremental flexibility in routing options rather than a fundamental architectural leap. Such tweaks are standard as services try to broaden compatibility but don’t necessarily indicate superior performance.
For founders and CTOs navigating AI vendor hype, the takeaway is clear: don’t accept outlier claims without demanding evidence. Until Sakana opens up verification or the wider industry independently confirms gains, it’s safer to view Fugu Ultra 1.1’s promises as tentative. Claims without transparency will only complicate vendor evaluation, not simplify it.
